Larke, Canavan win Ditmar for best novel

Glenda Larke’s The Lascar’s Dagger (Hachette) and Trudi Canavan’s Thief’s Magic (Hachette) have been named joint winners of the best novel award at this year’s Ditmar Awards for Australian science-fiction, fantasy and horror writing.

The awards were presented at the 40th annual Swancon Festival, which was held in Perth from 2-6 April.

The winning titles in each of the other categories are:

  • Best novella: ‘The Legend Trap’ by Sean Williams, in Kaleidoscope (Twelfth Planet Press)
  • Best short story: ‘The Seventh Relic’ by Cat Sparks, in Phantazein (FableCroft Publishing)
  • Best collected work: Kaleidoscope (ed by Alisa Krasnostein & Julia Rios, Twelfth Planet Press)
  • Best artwork: Kathleen Jennings for Phantazein (FableCroft Publishing)
  • Best fan artist: Kathleen Jennings
  • Best fan publication: ‘The Writer and the Critic’ (Kirstyn McDermott & Ian Mond)
  • Best fan writer: Tansy Rayner Roberts
  • Best new talent: Helen Stubbs.

 

In addition to these awards, the Norma K Hemming Award for excellence in exploration of race, gender, sexuality, class and disability in Australian literature was presented to The Wonders (Paddy O’Reilly, Affirm Press); the A Bertram Chandler Award for outstanding achievement in Australian science-fiction was awarded to Donna Maree Hanson; and the Peter McNamara Award for lifetime achievement went to Merv Binns.
