Text Prize 2018 shortlist announced

The shortlist has been announced for the 2018 Text Prize for Young Adult and Children’s Writing.

The five shortlisted manuscripts are:

• ‘The End of the World is Bigger Than Love’ by Davina Bell, the story of identical twins on a remote island while a mysterious catastrophe consumes the world and a mysterious stranger arrives.
• ‘Shepherd’ by Catherine Jinks, about 14-year-old convict living in a shepherd’s hut in the bush, who faces a life-and-death battle, when a wronged fellow shepherd returns to exact his revenge.
• ‘It Sounded Better in My Head’ by Nina Kenwood, about a girl who is struggling with the divorce of her parents, her two best friends hooking up, and an unexpected romance.
• ‘Hattie or a Thousand Miles up the Nile’ by Pamela Rushby, about an orphan who is sent to live with her Egyptologist relatives in a castle, and discovers that they unwrap mummies at wealthy homes for a living.
• ‘Black Dog, Small Bird’ by Emily Spurr, about a girl learning to cope with the disappearance of her mother and eventually unravelling the mystery of her mother’s fate.

The five manuscripts have been chosen from over 200 entries for the $10,000 prize, with this year’s authors ranging from award-winning writers to debut novelists.

The winner of the 2018 Text Prize will be announced on 26 April at an event in Melbourne.
