North Fitzroy Library nominated for 2018 Melbourne Design Awards

The City of Yarra’s Bargoonga Nganjin North Fitzroy Library and Community Hub has been nominated for the 2018 Melbourne Design Awards.

The library building’s new $15+ million design, which was led by design studio GroupGSA, incorporates the library, a maternal and child health facility and a variety of community-focused facilities, including a new home for the City of Yarra’s International House.

The City of Yarra council said it wanted the library to ‘create a cross-generational meeting place for people of different cultures and ethnicities with a strong focus on user experience, future flexibility and environmentally sustainable design’. The building’s name, ‘Bargoonga Nganjin’, means ‘Gather Everybody’ in Woiwurrung, the language of the Wurundjeri people.

The project was nominated in the Melbourne Design Awards’ public and institutional architecture category. Special mention was made of ‘a number of innovations’ in the building, including a rooftop garden that ‘enhances the overall sustainable design by inclusion of an under-decking water-catchment system’.

The library is one of three projects to be shortlisted in the category so far, with nominations for the awards closing on 4 May. Winners will be announced on 17 May.

The Melbourne Design Awards are administered by Driven x Design, a global community of over 75,000 designers, 5000 brands and 1500 studios.
