Readings renovates flagship Carlton shop

Melbourne independent bookseller Readings will refurbish its flagship Carlton shop, after 20 years in its current location.

The Lygon Street shop will be closed for approximately seven weeks from Tuesday, 22 May, during which time Readings will operate a pop-up shop across the road in Lygon Court.

‘The building is an ex-bank and one-third of the rear is taken up by the old bank safe and it’s bugged me for years,’ said Readings managing director Mark Rubbo. ‘We’ll be demolishing that so we can open the area up for a much better display, events and function space. We are all very excited by the project.’

Readings is engaging Nest Architects—the same team responsible for the fit-out of both Readings Doncaster and Readings Kids. Nest Architects director Emilio Fuscaldo said the design will be ‘timeless and sophisticated’.

Readings Kids will continue to trade as usual, and there will be no change to deliveries, which should continue to go to the Readings warehouse on Drummond Street.
