New small publisher Elephant Tree Publishing launches first title

A new Canberra-based small publisher of fiction, nonfiction and young adult fiction has recently released its first title.

Mother-and-daughter team Jennifer Brown-Leslie and Kathryn Spurling have established Elephant Tree Publishing alongside an imprint focusing on military history books, Missing Pages Books. The new small press released its first title in April: Fire at Sea: HMAS Westralia 1998, authored by Spurling, who has previously published several military history titles through New Holland Publishers.

The pair aims to publish ‘five or six books a year depending on submissions’, and Brown-Leslie emphasises that they seek to offer women (‘though not exclusively’) the opportunity to submit manuscripts. ‘We are particularly interested in crime, political thrillers and stories that explore the human experience. We are also interested in young adult fiction,’ said Brown-Leslie, adding that they are also interested in Australian-authored titles that ‘concentrate on the Australian experience’.

Brown-Leslie said that Elephant Tree Publishing is currently working on a range of upcoming titles, including ‘a young adult book exploring ethereal spirits, an Australian military/political thriller set in Canberra, and a contemporary mother-daughter relationship piece’.

Elephant Tree Publishing has a distribution agreement with Dennis Jones and Associates.
