Shortlist announced for inaugural Banjo Prize
The shortlist for the 2018 Banjo Prize has been announced. Launched by HarperCollins in March this year, the prize will be awarded for an unpublished work of commercial fiction.
The shortlisted manuscripts are:
- ‘Bordertown’ (Gregory James)
- ‘Nothing Gold’ (Ruth McIver)
- ‘Burn’ (Tim Slee)
- ‘When Secrets Come to Light’ (Sonya Spreen Bates)
- ‘Bail Up’ (Monissa Whitely).
HarperCollins head of fiction Catherine Milne said, ‘These five writers have so much potential, and each of their manuscripts—a gritty outback crime story, a pacy mystery, a comic bushranger caper, a gripping police procedural and a compelling country tale—offer something intriguing, different and appealing.’
The inaugural prize received over 320 entries from around Australia. Two runners-up will each receive a written assessment of their manuscript, and the winner will receive a publishing contract with HarperCollins Australia, with an advance of $15,000.
