Digital Writers’ Festival announces 2018 program

The program for the 2018 Digital Writers’ Festival (DWF), which runs from 30 October to 3 November, has been announced.

More than 140 guests will participate in the digital festival, which is presented online and includes interactive projects, an interactive virtual reality (VR) lecture, and online professional development seminars.

This year, DWF is partnering with pan-African writers’ collective Jalada to create a special edition of their online publication. Featuring five writers based across Africa and five African writers based in Australia, Jalada x DWF: Diaspora is described as ‘a testament to the possibilities for collaboration and communication that we are afforded as members of diaspora in the digital age’.

Other program highlights include a discussion on how Amazon’s reader reviews influences the way in which books are created, marketed, publicised, sold, consumed and commented on; an ‘exploratory un-panel’ that looks at the queering of nonfiction; a live discussion about the nature of creativity in the age of artificial intelligence titled ‘When Humans and Machines Collaborate’; a discussion on disability and the screen; and the production of nine podcast episodes covering the ethics, art and craft of telling stories in the digital age, which will be released throughout the festival.

Festival-long events include the $1000 Microfiction Challenge, a collaborative map project titled ‘Earth, Monstrous Body’, and a pen pal project where participants are invited to email their favourite book or literary character.
