National Book Critics Circle Awards 2018 shortlists announced

In the US, the shortlists for the 2018 National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) Awards have been announced.

The finalists include:

Fiction

  • Milkman (Anna Burns, Faber)
  • Slave Old Man (Patrick Chamoiseau, trans by Linda Coverdale, Dialogue)
  • The Largesse of the Sea Maiden (Denis Johnson, Vintage)
  • The Mars Room (Rachel Kushner, Vintage)
  • The House of Broken Angels (Luis Alberto Urrea, Back Bay).

Nonfiction

  • The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border (Francisco Cantú, Vintage)
  • Directorate S: The CIA and America’s Secret Wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan (Steve Coll, Penguin Press)
  • The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure (Greg Lukianoff & Jonathan Haidt, Penguin Press)
  • We the Corporations: How American Businesses Won Their Civil Rights (Adam Winkler, Liveright)
  • God Save Texas: A Journey into the Soul of the Lone Star State (Lawrence Wright, Knopf).

Shortlists were also announced in the categories of autobiography, biography, criticism, and poetry.

The winners of three additional prizes were also announced. Publisher of Hispanic literature Arte Público Press received the Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award; Tommy Orange’s debut novel There There (Harvill Secker) received the John Leonard Prize, which recognises outstanding first books in any genre; and Maureen Corrigan received the Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing.
