Hardie Grant acquires Turnbull memoir

Hardie Grant Books has acquired world rights to a memoir by former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

The book is described as ‘an in-depth and definitive narrative of Turnbull’s prime ministership and his time in politics’. It will describe his early life and career across law, investment and banking, and will include some of the ‘high-profile characters and controversies’ he encountered.

Turnbull worked as the publisher’s lawyer in a 1987 legal battle with the British government, when it attempted to block the publication of Spycatcher, the autobiography of former MI5 officer Peter Wright. Hardie Grant previously published Turnbull’s 1999 book on the republic referendum, Fighting for the Republic.

Turnbull is working with publisher Arwen Summers to have the book ready for publication in late 2019.

‘Malcolm’s writing is immediate and intelligent, infused with a wry humour and illuminated by extracts from a diary he kept throughout his political career,’ said Summers. ‘From page one the book is entertaining, sophisticated and provocative, and we see Malcolm as we have never seen him before.’

Hardie Grant will publish the memoir globally in late 2019.
