Overland announces Judith Wright Poetry Prize shortlist

The shortlist for the 2018 Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize for new and emerging poets has been announced.

The shortlisted poems are:

  • ‘Surfing at black fellas’ (Ross Belton)
  • ‘Post (c) Odes: a mathematical history of Australia’ (Dave Drayton)
  • ‘The disabled warrior emerges from darkness’ (Robin M Eames)
  • ‘According to Aristotle I am a man’ (Kerry Harte)
  • ‘Acacia Land’ (Julie Jedda Janson)
  • ‘Untitled’ (Julie McElhone)
  • ‘My time in Govie Housing draws to a close’ (Sarah Rice)
  • ‘nadelstich’ (Joel Scott)
  • ‘It’s about time’ (Kaitlen Wellington).

This year’s judges are Alison Whittaker, Nguyễn Tiên Hoàng and Overland poetry editor Toby Fitch.

The winner receives a major prize of $6000, the first runner-up is awarded $2000 and the second runner-up receives $1000. The three poems will be published in the first issue of Overland for 2019 in late March.
