British Academy’s Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize shortlist announced

In the UK, the British Academy has announced the shortlist for the £25,000 (A$44,930) Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize for Global Cultural Understanding, reports the Bookseller.

The shortlisted titles are:

• How the World Thinks: A global history of philosophy (Julian Baggini, Granta)
• A Fistful of Shells: West Africa from the rise of the slave trade to the age of revolution (Toby Green, Penguin)
• Maoism: A global history (Julia Lovell, Bodley Head)
• The Lies That Bind: Rethinking identity (Kwame Anthony Appiah, Profile)
• Latinx: The new force in American politics and culture (Ed Morales, Verso)
• Remnants of Partition: 21 objects from a continent divided (Aanchal Malhotra, Hurst).

The shortlist comprises three authors from the UK, two from the US and one from India.

The annual prize ‘celebrates nonfiction that illuminates the connections and divisions that shape cultural identity worldwide’. The winner will be announced at a ceremony at the British Academy on 30 October,

Last year’s prize was won by Kapka Kassabova for Border: A journey to the edge of Europe (Granta).
