CHASS Australia Book Prize 2019 longlist announced

The Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) has announced the longlist for the 2019 Australia Book Prize.

The prize, worth $3500, is part of the CHASS Australia Prizes program, which aims to draw international attention to Australia’s achievements in the humanities, arts and social sciences.

The longlisted titles are:

• Fair Share: Competing claims and Australia’s economic future (Stephen Bell and Michael Keating, MUP)
• Europe: A natural history (Tim Flannery, Text)
• The Sydney Wars: Conflict in the early colony, 1788 – 1817 (Stephen Gapps, NewSouth)
• Deep Time Dreaming: Uncovering ancient Australia (Billy Griffiths, Black Inc.)
• The Arsonist: A mind on fire (Chloe Hooper, Hamish Hamilton)
• The Bible in Australia: A cultural history (Meredith Lake, NewSouth)
• Eggshell Skull (Bri Lee, A&U)
• Elizabeth Macarthur: A Life at the edge of the world (Michelle Scott Tucker, Text)
• You Daughters of Freedom: The Australians who won the vote and inspired the world (Claire Wright, Text).

A shortlist of three titles will be released later this month. The winner will be announced at the 2019 CHASS Australia Prizes Dinner on 30 October in Melbourne.
