Women’s Prize for Fiction 2020 longlist announced

In the UK, the longlist for the 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction has been announced. Now in its 25th year, the £30,000 (A$58,370) prize is presented annually to the best novel written in English by a woman.

The 16 longlisted novels are:

• Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line (Deepa Anappara, Chatto & Windus)
• Fleishman is in Trouble (Taffy Brodesser-Akner, Wildfire)
• Queenie (Candice Carty-Williams, Trapeze)
• Dominicana (Angie Cruz, John Murray)
• Actress (Anne Enright, Jonathan Cape)
• Girl, Woman, Other (Bernardine Evaristo, Hamish Hamilton)
• Nightingale Point (Luan Goldie, HQ Fiction)
• A Thousand Ships (Natalie Haynes, Mantle)
• How We Disappeared (Jing-Jing Lee, Oneworld)
• The Most Fun We Ever Had (Claire Lombardo, W&N)
• The Mirror and the Light (Hilary Mantel, Fourth Estate)
• Girl (Edna O’ Brien, Faber)
• Hamnet (Maggie O’ Farrell, Tinder Press)
• Weather (Jenny Offill, Granta)
• The Dutch House (Ann Patchett, Bloomsbury)
• Red at the Bone (Jacqueline Woodson, W&N).

The longlist features six debut novels, as well as previous Booker Prize-winners Bernardine Evaristo, Hilary Mantel and Anne Enright. A shortlist of six will be announced on 22 April and the winner will be announced 3 June.

American writer Tayari Jones won last year’s Women’s Prize for Fiction for her novel An American Marriage (Vintage).
