Bloomsbury withdraws Haigh cookbook

In the UK, Bloomsbury has withdrawn a cookbook by Michelin-starred chef and former MasterChef contestant Elizabeth Haigh from circulation, reports the Bookseller.

Makan: Recipes from the heart of Singapore was released earlier this year but has been withdrawn by the publisher following claims by cookbook author Sharon Wee that content in the book was ‘copied or paraphrased’ from her own 2012 book without consent.

Wee’s Growing Up in a Nonya Kitchen is a book of memoir and recipes. In a statement, Wee said she was ‘distressed to discover that certain recipes and other content from my book had been copied or paraphrased without my consent in Makan … I immediately brought this matter to the attention of the book’s publisher, Bloomsbury Absolute. I am grateful that Bloomsbury has responded to my concerns by withdrawing Makan from circulation.’

The Guardian details some of the similarities between the two books, and reports that Bloomsbury said the title has been ‘withdrawn due to rights issues’.
