Dragons of Hallow #1: Spellhound (Lian Tanner, illus by Sally Soweol Han, A&U Children’s)
Lian Tanner is well known for her middle grade fantasy series, including The Keepers and The Rogues. Her latest is the first in a new series, set in the intriguing world of Hallow, where a giant spellhound pup (a magical dog), a minch-wiggin (a tiny creature that looks human but with the head of a teddy bear, whiskers and a tail) and a 10-year-old Queen in disguise are thrust together on a dramatic quest. They must rescue their land from the return of a terrifying dragon, prophesised to bring about the end of Hallow. There are many secrets in Hallow and our unknown narrator refuses to tell some of them, but can be convinced with green jelly-babies to tell others. There are also many other strange creatures that play important roles, and a powerful witch known only as the Lady, who may well be the villain of the story. This highly engaging fantasy adventure is set in a unique magical world filled with delightful, quirky characters. There are many twists and turns, particularly as it comes to its startling conclusion, but there is also plenty of humour. Full-page illustrations by Sally Soweal Han scattered throughout the text add to the charm. Spellhound will be enjoyed by fantasy lovers aged nine and up, or would make a captivating read-aloud for younger children.
