In the UK, Nadia Mikal has been named the £5000 (A$9160) overall winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for her debut novel, The Cats We Meet Along the Way (Guppy Books), reports the Bookseller.

The Cats We Meet Along the Way tells the story of Aisha and her family ‘who, with the world due to end imminently, embark on an eventful road trip across Malaysia to find her estranged sister June’. Mikal’s novel also won the Waterstones prize for best book for older readers. The other category winners, who each receive £2000 (A$3660), are Nura and the Immortal Palace (M T Khan, Walker) in the younger readers category, and Gretel the Wonder Mammoth (Kim Hillyard, Ladybird) in the illustrated books category.

The winning titles were chosen from shortlists announced last month. The Waterstones Children’s Book Prize is voted for by Waterstones booksellers, with the winning books promoted across the retail chain’s stores. For more information, visit the Waterstones website.
