HarperCollins settles and apologises after defamation case; Booktopia ends Nash agreement, Traurig to resign
HarperCollins Australia has settled a long-running defamation suit brought against it by John Gill, a former doctor from the defunct Chelmsford psychiatric hospital in Sydney; Booktopia has announced it will end a consultation agreement with founder and former CEO Nash, and the intended resignation of CCO Traurig, as it looks to raise $8.1 million; and Berbay Publishing has announced a partnership with Hardie Grant Australia for the sale and distribution of its titles.
In prize and funding news, recipients of the artsACT Arts Activities and Arts Organisation funding have been announced, including several literature-related projects, and the winners of the ACT Notable Book Awards 2023 have also been announced. The 2023 Rachel Funari Prize for Fiction has gone to Sydney Khoo.
Overseas, at the first in-person Beijing International Book Fair since 2019, over 200,000 visitors attended the event; the UK government has launched a consultation into its Public Lending Right scheme; and sales by French book publishers fell 5.4% in 2022, while Canada’s leading book retailer, Indigo Books & Music, recorded a small decline in sales.
