Around 200 jobs to go at T&F

Academic publisher Taylor & Francis (T&F) will remove around 200 roles from its business, reports the Bookseller.

In a letter to staff, T&F said there would be ‘changes to certain teams, as the business looks to focus its investment and activities on areas offering the strongest future growth opportunities’. The job losses will be taken from its F1000, marketing, product & technology and support teams, while its commercial, operations, researcher services and advanced learning areas will be unaffected.

According to the Bookseller, the influx of marketing and support staff brought in during the Covid pandemic may be particularly affected. A voluntary redundancy program will begin on 29 September, however T&F told staff it may need to make compulsory redundancies.

T&F told the Bookseller the proposed changes ‘would see around 200 roles removed from the business, primarily from support functions’. ‘After the programme, the total headcount across T&F would still be around 15% higher than in 2019, reflecting our continued growth and investment in the areas where we see the best future opportunities,’ said T&F.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) T&F spokesperson told the Bookseller the NUJ is ‘extremely disappointed by the decision that T&F has made to put hundreds of jobs in the UK and globally at risk of redundancy’. ‘Especially because it comes on top of a pay negotiation process that has been needlessly protracted and in which welfare concerns have been pushed aside because of their impact on the bottom line,’ the spokesperson said.

T&F has 2695 staff around the world, but the company didn’t specify how many of the job losses would be in the UK and how many would be international.
