Danger Awards 2023 winners announced
The winners of the 2023 Danger Awards have been announced at the BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival.
Novelist Chris Hammer, who took out the award for best crime fiction, has won for the second time, having jointly won the award in 2021. This year the awards included the categories of crime fiction debut and people’s choice.
The winning titles, chosen from shortlists announced in September, are:
Best crime fiction
- The Tilt (Chris Hammer, A&U)
Best crime fiction debut
- Black River (Matthew Spencer, A&U)
Best true crime
- The Boy in the Dress (Jonathan Butler, Affirm)
People’s choice
- An Uncommon Hangman (Rachel Franks, NewSouth).
The Danger Awards recognise books featuring Australia as a setting for stories about crime and justice. The winners receive a trophy and $1000.
BAD chair Sue Turnbull said: ‘There are just so many excellent crime novels being written at the moment that choosing a winner has become an increasingly hard task. All the shortlisted crime novels were outstanding, demonstrating the range and quality of the crime fiction currently being published in Australia.’
‘Overall, the judges were extremely impressed by quality of all the entries that clearly illustrate the central theme of this year’s awards, that there is a place for every crime story and a crime story for every place.’
The winner of the 2022 award was Margaret Hickey for her debut novel Cutters End (Penguin).
