SPN conference program, consistent Black Friday sales boost, Bashford wins Nib Literary Award

The Small Press Network 2023 Independent Publishing Conference is on next week (23–25 November), and Nielsen BookData has reported a five-year pattern of boosted print book sales during Black Friday in Australia.

In local awards news, Alison Bashford has won the Mark and Evette Moran Nib Literary Award for An Intimate History of Evolution (Allen Lane), Nicky Phillips has won the UNSW Press Bragg Prize for Science Writing for her essay on the Kathleen Folbigg case, and the winners of the 2023 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards were announced.

Overseas, Tania Branigan was awarded the Cundill History Prize for Red Memory (Faber), Halik Kochanski won the Wolfson History Prize for Resistance (Allen Lane), and Benjamin Myers received the Goldsmiths Prize for Cuddy (Bloomsbury).

In other international news, Nielsen BookData’s Books & Consumers survey found continued growth in audiobook sales in the UK, especially in nonfiction.
