Spiro (Anna McGregor, Scribble)

Spiro is a humorous new picture book by Anna McGregor, the multi-award-winning creator of Anemone Is Not the Enemy. The protagonist is Spiro, a determined little spider on a mission to catch his next meal. He’s hungry for a juicy fly, a scrumptious moth, or a crunchy stink bug, but he’s not having much luck. Each time he builds a new web, a passer-by accidentally thwarts his best-laid plans. But, because this story shows young readers that success is a combination of perseverance and effort, Spiro tweaks his plans, researches web design, and tries again and again. Finally, with all of his exertion and a dash of good luck, Spiro successfully traps a feast of bugs and enjoys his meal! He also closely avoids becoming someone else’s dinner along the way. Spiro is a heartwarming picture book with a cheeky sense of humour and a solid message about persistence for young readers aged 3+. McGregor’s illustrations and hand-lettering add vibrancy to the tale, especially with the pops of neon pink. This fun journey has a satisfying conclusion, and Spiro’s hard work, formula for spidery success, and lucky break will bring joy to all.
