‘Bring up the Bodies’ wins 2012 Man Booker Prize, second for Mantel

Hilary Mantel has become the third author to win the Man Booker Prize twice, after she was announced the winner of the 2012 award for her novel Bring Up the Bodies (Fourth Estate).

The novel, which is a sequel to her 2009 Booker Prize winner Wolf Hall, was announced as the winning title overnight in London. Mantel is the first author to win the £50,000 (approximately A$78,000) prize with a sequel.

Previously, only Peter Carey and J M Coetzee have won the prestigious prize twice.

Mantel’s novel beat 145 entrants and a shortlist that included several titles by less well known names published by smaller presses: The Garden of Evening Mists (Tan Twan Eng, Myrmidon Books); Swimming Home (Deborah Levy, And Other Stories); The Lighthouse (Alison Moore, Salt Publishing); Narcopolis (Jeet Thayil, Faber); and Umbrella (Will Self, Bloomsbury).
