Australian Jewish Book Awards adds unpublished manuscript prize

Not-for-profit organisation Shalom Australia has announced the inaugural Australian Jewish Book Awards will include a new $4000 prize for an unpublished manuscript that engages with Jewish experience.

The Award for Unpublished Manuscripts (Jewish Subject) is open to writers of all levels. Along with the prize money, the winner will receive a mentorship with judge Lee Kofman and have their manuscript reviewed by Morry Schwartz, owner of Schwartz Publishing. Submissions close on 29 September and the winner will be announced in December.

In March, Shalom announced the inaugural Australian Jewish Book Awards, including a $10,000 award for Jewish nonfiction and a $5000 award for a young Jewish author.

The shortlist for the Young Jewish Writers Award has been announced, comprising: Mood (Roz Bellamy, Wakefield); Anxious in a Sweet Store (Anna Jacobson, Upswell); We Need to Talk About Ageing (Melissa Levi, Hachette); and So That Happened… But Maybe You Already Knew That (Tami Sussman, Walker Books).

The Award for Jewish Nonfiction and the Young Jewish Writers Award will be announced in August as part of the Sydney Jewish Writers Festival. More information about the awards is on the Shalom Australia website.
