New S&S/Author Solutions self-publishing business open to Australian authors

Simon & Schuster has announced that it will work with Author Solutions, the self-publishing business acquired by Penguin in July, to operate a separate publishing business called Archway Publishing.

Managing director of Simon & Schuster Australia Lou Johnson told Bookseller+Publisher that although S&S does not ‘currently have country-specific platforms, aspiring Australian or other international authors can publish with Archway’ by visiting the website at www.archwaypublishing.com.

Archway Publishing will offer would-be authors the editorial, design and distribution services normally offered by Author Solution as well as ‘a host of new options’ designed in consultation with S&S, reports the New York Times.

According to the newspaper, packages range from US$1599 (A$1530) to US$24,999 (A$23,929).

The new business will be staffed by Author Solutions, not S&S, though S&S vice president of corporate communications Adam Rothberg said the publisher would be monitoring Archway sales as a way of spotting new authors. He also confirmed that S&S was already well into planning the new venture when Author Solutions was acquired by Penguin.

As previously reported by Bookseller+Publisher, overseas news reports in October indicated that Author Solutions will be incorporated into the Penguin Random House joint venture if the new company is approved by regulators in 2013.
