Aotearoa New Zealand Book Industry Awards 2024 announced

The winners of the 2024 Aotearoa New Zealand Book Industry Awards have been announced.

Moa Press, an imprint of Hachette, was named publisher of the year, while Petronella’s Bookstore and The Booklover were jointly named bookshop of the year.

The winners in each category were:

Booksellers’ Choice Award (joint winners)

  • Fungi of Aotearoa (Liv Sisson, Penguin)
  • The Observologist (Giselle Clarkson, Gecko)

Aotearoa New Zealand Bestseller of the Year

  • Untouchable Girls: The Topp twins’ story (Jools and Lynda Topp, A&U New Zealand)

Aotearoa New Zealand Audiobook of the Year

  • Māori Made Easy (Scotty Morrison, Raupo)

Emerging Bookseller of the Year

  • Melissa Oliver, Unity Books Wellington

Book Retailer of the Year

  • Gisborne Paper Plus

Bookshop of the Year (joint winners)

  • Petronella’s Bookstore
  • The Booklover

Emerging Publisher of the Year

  • Grace Wang, Allen & Unwin New Zealand

Publisher of the Year

  • Moa Press

Sales Professional of the Year (joint winners)

  • Laura Jager, HarperCollins New Zealand
  • Paula Pengelly, Penguin Random House New Zealand

Innovation Award

  • BookHub, Booksellers Aotearoa

Mana Māori Award

  • Penguin Random House for 50 years of Witi Ihimaera in print

Marketing and Publicity Strategy of the Year

  • Allen & Unwin New Zealand for Untouchable Girls: The Topp twins’ story (Jools and Lynda Topp, A&U New Zealand)

Publishers Association of New Zealand Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Mike Hill and Susan Holmes, Bookreps New Zealand.

The awards were presented on Saturday 3 August in Auckland during the Booksellers Aotearoa New Zealand conference.
