City of Fremantle Hungerford Award 2024 shortlist announced

The shortlist for the 2024 City of Fremantle Hungerford Award has been announced.

Shortlisted manuscripts include:

  • ‘Far From Wonderful’, a fiction work by Howard McKenzie-Murray
  • ‘Screech’, a fiction work by Jodie Tes
  • ‘I Remember Everything’, a fiction work by Fiona Wilkes
  • ‘የተስፋ ፈተና / Trials of Hope’, a narrative nonfiction/poetry work by Yirga Gelaw Woldeyes.

The award is presented biennially to a full-length manuscript of fiction or narrative nonfiction by a Western Australian author previously unpublished in book form. The prize value has increased this year, following the announcement of a new fellowship from the Centre for Stories, to be awarded alongside the $15,000 cash prize and a publishing contract from Fremantle Press. The 2024 winner will be announced at an event on 24 October.

This year’s judging panel includes Seth Malacari, Marcella Polain and Richard Rossiter, alongside Fremantle Press publishers Georgia Richter and Cate Sutherland.

Speaking on behalf of Fremantle Press, Richter said: ‘I am excited by the range of these manuscripts—each distinct, singular and arresting in its own way—and delighted to meet four new talented Western Australian writers.’

The 2022 winner of the award was Molly Schmidt for Salt River Road.

More information about the award is available on the Fremantle Press website.
