‘Books+Publishing’ reviews: 83% of print books published simultaneously as ebooks; 60% of adult titles written by women

Books+Publishing has conducted an overview of its reviews pages for 2013 to reveal some interesting statistics about the Australian publishing industry.

In total, 232 Australian and New Zealand originated titles published in 2013 were reviewed in Books+Publishing, either in Books+Publishing magazine or on the website www.booksandpublishing.com.au. Of these, 88 titles were adult fiction, 45 were adult nonfiction and 99 were children’s/YA.

Ebook editions
Simultaneous print and ebook editions are now the norm in adult book publishing. In 2013, 98% of adult print books were published simultaneously as ebooks, up from 90% in 2012 and 88% in 2011. The percentage is much lower in children’s/YA publishing, however, with just 63% of children’s/YA print books published simultaneously as ebooks, up slightly from 60% in 2012 and 2011.

Gender split
Of the 133 adult books reviewed in Books+Publishing over the past year, 60% were written by female authors and 40% by male authors. In 2012, 54% of adult books reviewed in Books+Publishing were written by female authors and 46% by male authors.

Next year, Books+Publishing will again partner with the Stella Prize to publish a breakdown of the number of books by men and women reviewed in local newspapers and literary journals in 2013. You can view the 2012 results here.
