Macleay Bookshop to close

Macleay Bookshop in Potts Point, New South Wales, will close on Friday 28 February, after 60 years of trading.

The independent bookstore, which sells new release and second-hand titles, was opened in 1954 as Clay’s Bookshop by owner Norma Chapman. The store was renamed Macleay Bookshop in 1997.

Owner Richard Stern told Books+Publishing that he has personal and private reasons for closing the bookstore and said: ‘I wish to do other things as I move towards retirement’. Stern said that he might be involved in the book industry in the future, but has not yet made any plans.

Stern had sought to find a buyer for the store throughout 2013, but without a new owner, the store will close when its lease ends on 28 February. However, there have been some interested buyers in the store’s stock and shelves. Stern said the shelves are made from 60-year-old maple wood and are in perfect condition.
