Inaugural Bookbinding and Book Arts Conference to be held in Auckland

The inaugural Bookbinding and Book Arts Conference will be held in Auckland, New Zealand, from 24 to 26 October, featuring experts from the UK and US, Booksellers NZ has announced.

The event at Auckland University of Technology’s conference centre will feature ‘some of the world’s master binders and book artists’ demonstrating their skills and talking on the topics of designing, collaborating, collecting, binding and illustrating books from ancient to modern times.

The keynote speakers will include UK designer-bookbinder Dominic Riley, who will speak on his approach to design binding and run workshops, and US book artist Julie Chen, who has published limited-edition artist books for 25 years. Chen is also an associate professor of book arts at Mills College in California.

There will be a trade fair where book suppliers can network with the professional and amateur bookbinders, calligraphers, librarians and specialists in related fields.

The conference is organised by the Association of Book Crafts, a New Zealand organisation dedicated to the promotion and practice of bookbinding. More information on the conference is available on the organisation’s website here.
