Nelson awarded Sri Lankan writing fellowship

The 2014 Templeberg Residential Writing Fellowship has been awarded to Canberra-based writer Lucy Nelson.

The one-month fellowship, which is offered by Writers Victoria and Templeberg Villa, will send Nelson to Galle in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka later this year.

Writers Victoria reports that Nelson will use her time in Sri Lanka ‘to work on a novel-length manuscript set within rural Sri Lanka about secrets that make slaves of their keepers’. ‘There is nothing that could more usefully serve the development of my project than being plunged into its spicy, sticky setting,’ said Nelson.

The fellowship includes a return airfare to Sri Lanka, accommodation, meals and a $1000 allowance.

Eleven writers were shortlisted for this year’s fellowship, which was judged by Sri Lanka-based author Royston Ellis; Australian travel writer Michelle Aung Thin; last year’s fellowship winner Michelle Wright; and Australia-based owners of Templeberg Villa, Christopher Shields and Brent Carey.
