Chambers releases Beatrice Davis Editorial Fellowship report
Susannah Chambers, commissioning editor of books for children and young adults at Allen & Unwin, has released her Beatrice Davis Editorial Fellowship report into YA literature following her three-month placement in New York.
In her report ‘Is Young Adult literature all grown up?’, Chambers examines the fortunes of YA literature since the rise of the blockbuster YA novel. Among the questions she considers are: have blockbuster YA books changed the way YA is edited, published and sold? Can you create a blockbuster? How can Australian publishers achieve the same levels of success for home-grown YA? And if they can, do they really want to?
The report draws on interviews with editors, agents, publicity, marketing and rights people across the publishing industry, as well as information gathered from editorial and acquisitions meetings; meetings of the American Association of Publishers; Children’s Book Council seminars; and ‘visiting as many bookshops as possible’.
The Beatrice Davis Editorial Fellowship is presented biennially to ‘recognise and reward editors for their contribution to Australian writing and publishing’.
