Dunedin named a UNESCO City of Literature

Dunedin in New Zealand has been designated a UNESCO Creative City of Literature.

The city is one of four newly designated Cities of Literature, the others being Granada, Spain; Heidleberg, Germany; and Prague in the Czech Republic.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Dunedin submitted its bid to become a UNESCO City of Literature in March this year.

Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull said one of the city’s first moves as an official City of Literature would be to organise an international conference related to literary culture.

‘This announcement puts our city on the world map as a first-class literary city,’ said Cull in a statement. ‘We keep honourable company; other cities bestowed with City of Literature status including Edinburgh, Dublin, Iowa City, Melbourne, Reykjavik, Norwich and Krakow.’
