ILF appoints Bryce as new patron

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) has appointed former Australian governor-general Quentin Bryce as its 2015 patron.

Bryce, who was governor-general from 2008-2014, said in a statement that she had travelled extensively to remote communities across Australia and had seen firsthand some of the barriers to literacy. ‘We know that literacy is the key to choice, to income security, to developing potential—and it is the key to an enriching and rewarding life. That is why the work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation is so important,’ she said.

Bryce’s first official function will be the launch of the 50th anniversary edition of The Legends of Moonie Jarl, to be published by ILF, at the State Library of Queensland on 4 March. Her duties as patron will include raising funds and awareness for the foundation.

Australian entrepreneur Therese Rein was a patron from 2008-2013.

The foundation has also appointed Patricia Genat, president of the Australian Booksellers Association, and Fraser Cargill, senior consultant with education consultancy EduWorld, to its board. In 2014 ILF raised $977,000.
