Goodman posthumously awarded CBCA Vic’s Leila St John Award

Jo Goodman has been posthumously awarded the Leila St John Award by the Victorian branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA). The award is presented annually for outstanding service to children’s literature in Victoria.

Goodman was recognised for her contribution to children’s literature on many levels, including as former president of the CBCA Victoria branch. As a teacher, Goodman introduced the ‘Read in Bed It’s Terrific’ (RIBIT) scheme. She was also instrumental in establishing the CBCA Victorian judges’ talks and the Clayton’s Night.

‘Her enthusiasm for books was shared with many and in numerous ways; always willing to share, challenge and celebrate with all those involved including authors, illustrators, editors and publishers,’ said the CBCA Victoria branch. ‘Jo changed the landscape of Australian children’s literature and we are all her beneficiaries.’

Goodman died last year, aged 73. Goodman’s husband and daughter accepted the award on her behalf.
