New podcast focuses on contemporary Australian poetry
A new podcast series with news and interviews about the contemporary Australian poetry scene has launched.
The Australian Poetry Podcast is hosted by poets Robbie Coburn and Nathan Hondros, with four episodes broadcast since the first debuted in March. Each program centres on a ‘conversational’ long-form interview with a local poet, and guests so far include Beth Spencer, whose most recent title Vagabondage was published by UWAP; Rochford Street Review publisher and poet Mark Roberts; and Jill Jones, winner of the Victorian Premier’s Prize for Poetry 2015.
Hondros told Books+Publishing he is ‘thrilled’ that each episode is attracting close to 1000 listeners, noting it’s a strong number ‘for any kind of poetical anything’. ‘We’ve had an incredible response from listeners who appreciate the long form interviews,’ said Hondros. ‘Over the last few years we’ve felt the terrible gap in our podcast listening when it comes to Australian poetry…[ABC Radio National program] Poetica was good to have, but there was also no real long form interview podcasts with Australian poets, which we thought was a shame.’
Hondros told Books+Publishing they hope to work with publishers to draw attention to certain new release titles. ‘It’s often tough for even our most regraded poets to get the word out about their books and their poetic practice,’ said Hondros. ‘So the Australian Poetry Podcast gives them a public platform to promote their work.’
