Australian Book Design Awards 2015 winners announced

The Australian Book Designers Association (ABDA) announced the winners for the 2015 Book Design Awards at an event in Sydney on 22 May.

The winning titles in each category are:

Best designed literary fiction book

Best designed commercial fiction book

Best designed nonfiction book

• Why We Took the Car (Wolfgang Herrndorf, Scribe), designed by Allison Colpoys

Best designed children’s illustrated book

• Mike I Don’t Like (Jol & Kate Temple, ABC Books), designed by Jon Foye

Best designed children’s fiction book

• Caro Was Here (Elizabeth Farrelly, Walker Books), designed by Gayna Murphy

Best designed children’s / young adult series

• ‘Choose Your Own Ever After’ series (Nova Weetman, Hardie Grant Egmont), designed by Stephanie Spartels

Indie 1000: best designed independent publication

• Analogue Bodies Vol. 1: Feet and Teeth (Tom Lee & Zoë Sadokierski, Page Screen), designed by Zoë Sadokierski

Best designed educational primary / secondary book

• Total Food 2 (Leanne Compton & Carol Warren, OUP), cover by Kim Ferguson, internal design by Kim Ferguson, Aisling Gallagher & Sue Dani

Best designed educational tertiary book

• Consumer Behaviour in Action (Peter Ling, Steven D’Alessandro & Hume Winzar, OUP), designed by Regine Abos

Young designer of the year

• Alissa Dinallo, designer of: Delicious (Ruth Reichl, A&U); Kindling (ed by Helen Scheuerer et al, Writer’s Edit); Poisoned Planet (Julian Cribb, A&U); and This Picture of You (Sarah Hopkins, A&U)

Designers’ choice best young adult / children’s cover of the year

• Max (Marc Martin, Viking), designed by Bruno Herfst & Marc Martin

Designers’ choice cover of the year

• A Fairy Tale (Jonas T Bengtsson, Scribe), designed by Allison Colpoys

Designers’ choice book of the year

• Sepia (Martin Benn, Murdoch Books), designed by Debra Billson.

The awards were judged by designers Kirby Armstrong, Allison Colpoys, Vince Frost, Fabio Ongarato and David Pearson; Big W books buyer Meredith Drake; former S&S managing director Lou Johnson; and the Australian literary editor Stephen Romei. The designers’ choice awards were chosen by ABDA members at the winners presentation.

This is the second year that the awards have been run by ABDA, which took over management of the awards from the Australian Publishers Association. For more information about the awards, visit the website here.
