James Patterson NZ bookshop grants announced

Four New Zealand bookshops have received grants of up to $5000 as part of James Patterson’s Australian and New Zealand bookshop grants.

The recipients are:

  • Hedleys Bookshop, Masterton
  • Wardini Books, Havelock North
  • Paper Plus Northlands, Christchurch
  • The Children’s Bookshop, Wellington.

Hedleys Bookshop will use its grant to employ a children’s book ambassador to connect with children via their local school through initiatives such as book groups, student-led newsletters and appointing young readers as library monitors.

Wardini Books will spend its grant on a trading card scheme to ‘incentivise and celebrate the achievements of young readers’. Children will be rewarded with trading cards for achievements such as finishing their first chapter book, completing a series, writing a book review or attending a book club.

Booksellers New Zealand chief executive Lincoln Gould said it was ‘inspiring to see one of the oldest bookselling families in the country, Hedleys in Masterton, and one of the newest, the Wards from Wardini Books in Havelock North, among the winners’.
