Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards 2016 shortlists announced

The 2016 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards shortlists have been announced.

The shortlisted titles are:

Fiction

  • Fever of Animals (Miles Allinson, Scribe)
  • The Other Side of the World (Stephanie Bishop, Hachette)
  • Clade (James Bradley, Hamish Hamilton)
  • Forever Young (Steven Carroll, HarperCollins)
  • The World without Us (Mireille Juchau, Bloomsbury)
  • The Natural Way of Things (Charlotte Wood, A&U)

Highly commended: Six Bedrooms (Tegan Bennett Daylight, Vintage), The Mothers (Rod Jones, Text) and Black Rock White City (A S Patrić, Transit Lounge)

Nonfiction

  • Modern Love: The Lives of John and Sunday Reed (Lesley Harding & Kendrah Morgan, Miegunyah Press)
  • Thea Astley: Inventing Her Own Weather (Karen Lamb, UQP)
  • Australia’s Second Chance (George Megalogenis, Hamish Hamilton)
  • Second Half First (Drusilla Modjeska, Knopf)
  • Something for the Pain (Gerald Murnane, Text)

Young adult

  • Welcome to Orphancorp (Marlee Jane Ward, Seizure)

Highly commended: Illuminae (Aimee Kaufman & Jay Kristoff, A&U) and Becoming Kirrali Lewis (Jane Harrison, Magabala)

Drama

  • Mortido (Angela Betzien, Currency Press)
  • Broken (Mary Anne Butler, Currency Press)
  • SHIT (Patricia Cornelius, Melbourne Theatre Company)

Highly commended: I am a Miracle (Declan Greene).

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Melbourne on 28 January 2016. The winner of each category is awarded $25,000 and goes into the running for the Victorian Prize for Literature, worth $100,000. A People’s Choice Award, worth $2000, will also be announced on the night.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Alan Atkinson won the 2015 Victorian Prize for Literature for his book The Europeans in Australia: Volume Three: Nation (NewSouth).
