Inaugural Deborah Cass Prize shortlist announced

The shortlist for Writers Victoria’s inaugural Deborah Cass Prize for emerging writers from migrant backgrounds has been announced.

The shortlisted works are:

  • ‘Scent of Sousan and Yasaman’ by Sanaz Fotouhi
  • ‘Losing my Religion’ by Fatima Sehbai
  • ‘A Peci for Mamadou’ by Tito Ambyo
  • ‘One Arabian Night’ by Maha Sidaoui
  • ‘The Autumn Limes of Amoo’ by Emilia Nazari
  • ‘The Shape of Your Song’ by Magdalena McGuire
  • ‘Peacekeeper’ by Rumiko Commons
  • ‘The Debt’ by Christine Lambrianidis
  • ‘Australia Day’ by Melanie Cheng
  • ‘Tales From San Ginese’ by Moreno Giovannoni.

Entrants will be judged on a 3000-word extract from an unpublished manuscript that ‘reflects at least in part on the migrant experience’. The winning author will receive $3000 and a three-month mentorship with an established writer, and Black Inc. will ‘consider the resulting manuscript’ for publication.
