Roy wins 2016 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature

Indian novelist Anuradha Roy has won the 2016 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature for her novel Sleeping on Jupiter (Quercus). Roy’s novel was selected from a shortlist of six to win the US$50,000 (A$72,907) prize, which is awarded annually to the best work of fiction pertaining to the South Asian region published in English in the previous calendar year. Judge Mark Tully said Sleeping on Jupiter was chosen for its ‘elegance, flair and readability’. ‘It raises many issues succinctly and with commendable economy of words,’ said Tully. ‘We believe this book will be a source of inspiration to other writers.’ The prize was announced during the Fairway Galle Literary Festival in Galle, Sri Lanka, which ran from 13-17 January.
