Lamb wins 2016 Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship

Matthew Lamb has won the 2016 Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship for his proposed cultural biography of the Australian writer Frank Moorhouse.

Lamb, the founder and editor of the Review of Australian Fiction and editor of Island magazine, was selected from a shortlist of nine for the $10,000 fellowship.

‘Matthew’s robust and erudite approach to biography impressed the judges,’ said fellowship judge Janine Burke. ‘He has chosen one of the heroes of the Australian literary scene who thoroughly deserves such a precise and timely study.’

Lamb’s biography of Moorhouse will cover the author’s life and the development of his writing, and will also ‘incorporate a cultural history of the times that shaped Moorhouse and that Moorhouse himself helped to shape—including elements such as politics, surveillance, the League of Nations, sexuality and gender’, said Writers Victoria in a statement.

The Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship was established in 2011 by the Hazel Rowley Literary Fund and Writers Victoria to encourage Australian authors to attain a high standard of biography writing and to commemorate the life, ideas and writing of Hazel Rowley, who died in 2011. Last year’s winner was Caroline Baum.
