Inaugural ‘Overland’ Neilma Sidney Prize winners announced
The winner and runners-up for Overland’s inaugural Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize for travel-themed short fiction have been announced.
Lauren Foley’s ‘K-K-K’, a ‘story about states of placenessness’ inspired by Syria, was chosen from a shortlist of eight to win the $4000 prize. The story will be published in Overland’s print edition.
The two runners-up, who each receive $500 and publication in Overland online, are Toby Sime for ‘Civilisation at last’ and Ashleigh Synnott for ‘On the road to Kuang Si Falls’.
Judges Alice Pung, Ellen van Neerven and Stephanie Convery said Foley’s winning story ‘effortlessly weave[s] humour into what is essentially a story about displacement and different forms of violence’.
The Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize awards short fiction of up to 3000 words, and is open to writers at any stage of their career. For more information, click here.
