Introducing Teddy (Jessica Walton, illus by Dougal MacPherson, Bloomsbury)
Introducing Teddy is a charming picture book about a young boy and his transgender teddy bear. First-time author Jessica Walton has teamed up with illustrator Dougal MacPherson on the book, which began as a crowdfunded project. It tells the story of Errol and his teddy bear, Thomas, who are best friends. When Errol finds out that Thomas wants to be called ‘Tilly’, he hugs Tilly and tells her all that matters is that they are friends. It’s a simple and heart-warming story that manages to show the internal struggle faced by many transgender individuals, and the accepting and cheerful attitudes innate in children. It may sound like a heavy subject for a picture book, but it’s deftly managed by Walton. MacPherson’s illustrations are child-like and extremely expressive; every page is rich in detail and colour. Introducing Teddy is a book for adults as much as children. The story of a boy and his teddy is ideal for parents to read to younger children, but it’s the message of unwavering love that will resonate with adults. It’s a beautiful addition to a growing canon of books for queer families, and one that would enrich the lives of many children.
