MWF 2016 schools program released

The Melbourne Writers Festival has released its schools program for 2016.

This year’s program, which runs from 29 August to 1 September, features Magda Szubanski, John Marsden, Anna Funder, Alice Pung, Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff and Claire Zorn, among other Australian authors and illustrators. International guests include US authors David Levithan, Meg Rosoff and Rainbow Rowell.

Some of the highlights in this year’s program are: ‘Bully for You’, a session on the struggles of high school with David Burton and Claire Zorn; ‘Man up!’, an exploration of what it means to be a man in the 21st century with Emily Maguire and Chris Miles; ‘Stories for Everyone’, which explores diversity with Leanne Hall and Rebecca Lim; and ‘Funny People’, a session on the importance of comedy with Shamini Flint and Tony Wilson. Other topics covered in talks, debates and workshops include videogame writing, memoir, song lyrics, fandom and Indigenous literature.

‘For the first time Melbourne Writers Festival has formed Youth Programming Committees including students from Footscray City College and Wesley College to test ideas and gather feedback on books, authors and events that most appeal to school audiences,’ said festival director Lisa Dempster.
