Birrell steps down as SWF artistic director
Sydney Writers’ Festival (SWF) artistic director Jemma Birrell is stepping down from the position at the end of this year after overseeing the past four festivals.
SWF chair Deena Shiff said Birrell’s artistic leadership has been ‘outstanding’, having ‘broadened the festival’s remit and delivered festivals which celebrate writing across forms including books, music, film and television. ‘She has expanded our audience reach through her vision and belief in great writing,’ said Shiff. ‘She has encouraged writers to come to participate in a festival that is ever livelier and provoking. Our reputation has been elevated as a result of her efforts.’
The past three festivals have had the highest-ever attendances, and ticket revenue has increased by around 80% since 2014.
SWF will begin searching for a new artistic director before the end of the year.
