Waterstones’ Children’s Book of the Month titles boosted by 10,000-15,000 copies

In the UK, the Waterstones’ Children’s Book of the Month promotion has been widely praised for boosting the sales of middle-grade titles, reports the Bookseller.

While Waterstones declined to provide exact sales figures, all of the books selected for the promotion in 2016 posted sales of over 13,000 copies through BookScan. The top-selling title, selling over 86,000 copies, was David Solomons’ My Brother is a Superhero (Nosy Crow), which was selected as the Children’s Book of the Month in March and April, and won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize last year.

Chicken House MD Barry Cunningham said the promotion boosts sales on average by 10,000-15,000 copies, and in some cases ‘even by 40,000-50,000 copies’. ‘It’s great that Waterstones doesn’t just go for big names, it goes for debut authors,’ said Cunningham. ‘We love that it’s not one draconian system where everything is the same; instead the booksellers create these incredible window displays.’
