New Melbourne Jewish Book Week to host inaugural event in May

The newly established Melbourne Jewish Book Week will host its first event on the 28 May, ahead of its first full program in May 2018.

Curated by Gary Abrahams, the event will feature storytelling, poetry, performance and music, with original works from Steven Amsterdam, Elise Hearst, Leah Kaminsky, Nadja Spiegelman, Arnold Zable and Nevo Zisin.

Melbourne Jewish Book Week, which is run in association with Monash University’s Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation, is ‘committed to the promotion of Jewish writing and literary culture around Australia’, including prose, poetry, plays, journalism, songs and film.

The organisation has the same team and programming committee as the former Melbourne Jewish Writers’ Festival, with two new directors, Noe Harsel and Janine Schloss, coming on board. Melbourne Jewish Book Week is also inspired by London’s Jewish Book Week.

Harsel and Schloss said: ‘Melbourne is so rich with Jewish culture and is a UNESCO City of Literature so it is fitting to host a festival bringing these two strengths together.’
