‘Small Things’ wins 2017 Gold Ledger Award
The winners of the 2017 Ledger Awards for excellence in Australian comics and graphic novels were announced in Sydney on the 19 June.
The winner of the Gold Ledger was Small Things (Mel Tregonning, A&U), a wordless graphic novel about ‘a boy who feels alone with his worries, but who learns that help is always close by’. Small Things is also shortlisted for the CBCA Crichton Award for New Illustrators.
Silver Ledgers were awarded to Australi (Timothy Wood, illus by Pius Bak, self-published) and Past the Last Mountain #1-4 (Paul Allor, art and colours by Louie Joyce, layouts by Gannon Beck, Comics Experience).
Bronze Ledgers were awarded to Negative Space (Ryan K Lindsay, art by Owen Gieni, letters by Ryan Ferrier, Dark Horse Comics) and The Spider King (Josh Vann, art by Simone D’Armini, colours by Adrian Bloch, letters by Nic J., self-published).
Gold Ledgers are awarded to titles that appear on five or more judges’ shortlists, Silver Ledgers to titles that appear on four judges’ shortlists and Bronze Ledgers to titles that appear on three judges’ shortlists.
Michael Fikaris received the Platinum Ledger for contribution to Australian comic arts and community, and May Gibbs and Paul Wheelahan were the recipients of the Ledger of Honour Hall of Fame Award.
