Morrison wins ALS Gold Medal
Zoe Morrison has won the 2017 Australian Literature Society (ALS) Gold Medal for her debut novel Music and Freedom (Vintage).
Morrison’s novel was chosen from a shortlist of six and a longlist of 12.
Music and Freedom is the story of young girl who moves from rural Australia to England with the dream of becoming a concert pianist, and becomes trapped in an abusive relationship. It won the 2016 Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction and was a commended entry in the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript.
The ALS Gold Medal is presented annually by the Association for the Study of Australian Literature (ASAL) for a ‘work of outstanding literary merit’ published in the previous calendar year. Last year’s winner was Brenda Niall’s Mannix (Text).
