NLA to relaunch CiP service as Prepublication Data Service

The National Library of Australia (NLA) will relaunch the Cataloguing-in-Publication (CiP) service as the Prepublication Data Service on 20 November.

The renamed Prepublication Data Service will introduce changes to the application process for a pre-publication catalogue record in a bid to ‘provide a simpler experience for publishers’.

Under the new service, applications will be instantly processed, eliminating the former 10-day waiting period, and publishers will be able to select subjects from a short list. The current CiP statement printed in books will be replaced by a new cataloguing statement.

The library will also make the ISBN field in the application non-mandatory in a trial to see if it will ‘capture a broader range of pre-publication data’.

Pre-publication records will continue to be upgraded to full cataloguing standards once a legal deposit of the corresponding book has been processed at the NLA, and the library will continue to make the pre-publication catalogue records available to Australian libraries, library suppliers, and other members of the book industry.

The changes are part of an ongoing campaign at the library to modernise the CiP service, which includes an announcement in August that the library will automatically generate pre-publication catalogue records from publishers’ metadata feeds.
